Cherrapunji (Sohra) Presbyterian Church
A Beacon of Faith and History in Sohra

On a ridge overlooking one of the wettest places on earth, the Cherrapunji Presbyterian Church stands as a testament to early missionary endeavors and enduring faith. Its brick-red roof and white facade, framed by the frequent mists and verdant landscape of Sohra (Cherrapunji), present a striking image. One of Meghalaya’s oldest surviving churches, this structure is more than just a place of worship; it chronicles a pivotal period in the region's socio-religious transformation.
History & Context
The arrival of Welsh Presbyterian missionaries in the mid-19th century marked a significant turning point for the Khasi Hills. Reverend Thomas Jones, a Welsh Congregationalist missionary, is credited with introducing the written Khasi language using the Roman script and establishing the first Presbyterian church in Sohra in 1841. This initial structure, however, was a modest affair, often affected by the intense monsoon rains. The present, more robust building, with its distinctive Gothic Revival architectural elements, was constructed later. It served as a central hub for the burgeoning Presbyterian movement, influencing education, healthcare, and social reforms throughout the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. The church's history is intertwined with the narrative of Cherrapunji itself, a place of historical importance long before becoming known for its record rainfall. The establishment of mission schools alongside the church played a crucial role in literacy and the spread of Western education among the local populace.
What Makes It Distinctive
Beyond its historical significance, the Cherrapunji Presbyterian Church is notable for its architecture. Unlike many simpler mission churches, this building exhibits elements of Gothic Revival design, including pointed arch windows, a prominent steeple, and robust stone construction, necessary to withstand Sohra's extreme weather conditions. The interior is relatively simple, focusing on the sanctity of the space, with wooden pews and an altar that speaks to its Protestant heritage. What truly sets it apart, however, is its resilience and continuous use over generations. It remains a vibrant center for the local Khasi Christian community, particularly during Sunday services and religious festivals. Visitors often observe the quiet dignity of the structure and the powerful sense of continuity it represents, contrasted with the ephemeral nature of the surrounding cloudscapes and rain.
Best Time to Visit
The cooler, drier months from October to March offer the most comfortable weather for visiting Sohra. The skies are generally clearer, allowing for better views of the surrounding valleys and a more pleasant experience exploring the church and its grounds. While the famous monsoon season (June to September) showcases Sohra at its most dramatic and green, the incessant rainfall can make outdoor activities, including a visit to the church, challenging. Visibility is often low during peak monsoon.
How to Reach
Sohra is well-connected by road from Shillong. The nearest major airport is Shillong Airport (Umroi Airport – SHL), approximately 90 km away, which has limited connectivity. Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam, is the more accessible and well-connected airport, about 170 km from Sohra. From Guwahati, a taxi or shared sumo will take approximately 4-5 hours to reach Sohra. The nearest major railhead is Guwahati Railway Station (GHY). Again, from Guwahati, road travel is the primary option. Private taxis are readily available from both Shillong and Guwahati.
Permits & Entry
There are no specific permits required for Indian citizens or foreign nationals to visit the Cherrapunji Presbyterian Church or Sohra itself. Entry to the church premises is generally free. Information is not officially published or may change. Visitors are advised to confirm locally before travelling. As a place of worship, respectful attire is appreciated.
