Chabimura

An ancient gallery of gods carved into the cliffs of the Gomati River

Chabimura

The chugging of the small motorboat is the only sound that breaks the stillness of the Gomati River. As you round a bend, leaving the small jetty at Amarpur behind, the banks close in, draped in a thick canopy of green. The journey itself is the first part of the pilgrimage. Then, the boatman cuts the engine and points. Hewn into the sheer rock face, a colossal figure emerges from the stone, a silent, powerful deity who has watched over this river for half a millennium. This is not a temple built by human hands, but a story etched directly onto the landscape.

History & Context

This remarkable open-air gallery of rock art is known as Chabimura, located within the Devtamura hill range in Tripura’s Gomati district. The name Devtamura translates to 'Hill of the Gods', and the site lives up to its name. The carvings are largely attributed to the 15th and 16th centuries, a period corresponding with the rule of the Manikya dynasty that governed Tripura for centuries. While precise historical records are sparse, the iconography is unmistakably Hindu, featuring a pantheon of deities. The remote, challenging location suggests the site held significant religious importance, perhaps as a secluded sanctuary for powerful tantric rituals or as a monumental display of a king's devotion, intended to be witnessed from the sacred river below.

What Makes It Distinctive

The centerpiece and most overwhelming feature is a massive, 12-metre-high carving of Goddess Durga in her Mahishasuramardini form, depicted slaying the buffalo demon. The sheer scale and detail of this sculpture, created on a vertical cliff face, is an astonishing feat of artistry and engineering. Unlike many archaeological sites which are ruins one walks through, Chabimura is an experience defined by water. The site is inaccessible by land; it can only be reached and viewed from a boat on the Gomati. This forced perspective, looking up from the moving water, gives the carvings a dynamic, almost living quality as the light and shadows play across their surfaces. The journey to the art is as integral as the art itself.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal window to visit is during the post-monsoon and winter months, from late October to March. During this period, the weather is dry and pleasant, and the water level in the Gomati River is calm and navigable. The clear skies and gentle sun make the boat journey comfortable and enhance the visibility of the carvings.

Visiting during the peak monsoon season (June to September) is strongly discouraged. The river can become dangerously swollen with strong currents, making boat travel unsafe and often impossible. The pre-monsoon months of April and May can be very hot and humid.

How to Reach

Chabimura is accessed from the town of Amarpur in the Gomati district.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport (IXA) in Agartala, approximately 85 km from Amarpur. From the airport, you can hire a taxi for the 2.5 to 3-hour journey to Amarpur.

From Amarpur, you must travel to the Rangapania or Fulkumari ferry ghat (jetty), from where you hire a local boat for the trip up the Gomati River to the carving site. The boat journey itself takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours each way.
