Permits & access
Indian travellers need an Inner Line Permit (ILP); foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) and must travel in a group of at least two with a registered operator. We arrange both with 10–14 days notice.

Arunachal Pradesh · 3,048 m
Tawang sits at 3,048 metres in the far west of Arunachal Pradesh, the spiritual heart of the Monpa people and home to the 17th-century Tawang Monastery — the largest in India and the second-largest in the world. This guide covers permits, the Sela Pass road, altitude pacing and how to design a trip that is scenic rather than punishing.
Highlights
Indian travellers need an Inner Line Permit (ILP); foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) and must travel in a group of at least two with a registered operator. We arrange both with 10–14 days notice.
Founded in 1680, the monastery houses 450 monks and an 8-metre gilded Buddha. Visit at first light (around 5:30 am) for the morning prayer assembly — easily the most moving 45 minutes of any Tawang trip.
Sela Pass (4,170 m) connects Dirang to Tawang via 101 sacred lakes. Madhuri Lake (Shungetser) lies further north and is reachable by separate ILP arrangement — bring oxygen and warm layers.
Bumla Pass (4,633 m) on the China border requires a separate same-day permit and an early start. The 1962 Sino-Indian War sites — Jaswant Garh and Nuranang Falls — are powerful stops on the route.
Tawang at 3,048 m is high enough to trigger mild altitude sickness. Sleep one night in Dirang (1,500 m) to acclimatise, drink three litres of water a day, avoid alcohol the first night and carry Diamox if you are prone.
Traveller Questions
March–June and September–early November are ideal. January–February are stunning but Sela Pass can close for days; July–August monsoon road conditions are unreliable.
Seven days from Guwahati or Tezpur is the minimum. Ten days lets you add Dirang, Eaglenest birding and a slow Monpa village day.
The road journey and 3,048 m altitude are demanding. With a Dirang night to acclimatise, a 4WD vehicle and a flexible itinerary, most fit travellers in their 60s manage it well.
