Neighbourhoods to know
Laitumkhrah is the café-and-music heart, walkable and student-led. Polo Hills offers heritage cottages and pine quiet. Police Bazar is the chaotic commercial centre — useful for shopping, less so for staying.

What to do
Walk Ward's Lake at first light, take the Don Bosco indigenous museum slowly (it is one of India's best ethnographic collections), spend an afternoon at the Cathedral and Police Bazar markets, and book at least one evening at a live music café — Café Shillong, Dylan's Café or Cloud 9.

Day trips from Shillong
Mawphlang sacred forest (1 hr), Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak (30 min), Umiam Lake (45 min), Cherrapunji and the root bridges (2.5 hr). Two nights in Shillong is the minimum to use it as a real base.
