01

Apatani villages

Hong, Hari, Hija, Bamin and Dutta are the seven traditional Apatani villages. Each is a tight cluster of bamboo-and-thatch homes with a central lapang (council platform). Visit slowly with a local guide — these are living villages, not museums.

02

Paddy-cum-fish agriculture

Apatani families flood their terraces in spring with rice seedlings and carp fingerlings — both harvested together in autumn. The result is a closed-loop system that has fed the valley for centuries. Field walks with a farmer-host are unforgettable.

03

Tattooed elder women

Older Apatani women carry nose plugs (yapping hulo) and dark facial tattoos — practices ended in the 1970s. The remaining elder bearers are roughly 60 women, and visits should be respectful: ask, offer a small gift and never photograph without consent.

04

Ziro Music Festival

Late September, four days of outdoor music in paddy fields — one of India's most distinctive independent festivals. Stays sell out 6–9 months ahead.

05

Eating & staying

Apatani food is rice, smoked pork, bamboo shoot and an extraordinary fermented millet beer called o. Homestays in Hong and Hari give the best access; one boutique lodge above the valley offers a comfortable mid-range alternative.
