01

Boating on the Umngot

The famous photographs come from November to early March when the water clears completely. Book a private boat at the Shnongpdeng or Darrang ghats; the standard ride is 1–2 hours, but a half-day trip to a sandbar with packed lunch is far better.

02

Shnongpdeng village

Most boats now leave from Shnongpdeng, 7 km upstream, where the river is wider and quieter than at Dawki town. Tented camps line the riverbank with simple but pleasant rooms and shared dining decks.

03

Adventure & swimming

Cliff jumping, kayaking, snorkelling (yes, in a river) and short hikes upstream. The water is cold even in winter; bring a quick-dry layer.

04

Mawlynnong combination

Mawlynnong — the famously clean Khasi village with a bamboo sky walk — is 30 minutes from Dawki. Most travellers visit both on the same trip with one base.

05

Border crossing & viewpoint

The India–Bangladesh border is a short walk from Dawki bazaar with a friendly handshake culture. The proper border crossing for travellers is at Tamabil, with a Bangladesh visa.

Traveller Questions

What you'll want to know.

When is the Umngot river clearest?

Mid-November to early March. Monsoon rains turn it cloudy from June through October.

Is Dawki worth an overnight?

Yes — daytrippers crowd the river between 11 am and 3 pm. An overnight at Shnongpdeng gives you dawn light and almost empty water.

Can foreigners visit Dawki?

Yes, no special permit required. The actual border crossing into Bangladesh needs a separate visa via Tamabil.
