Ferry crossing the Brahmaputra to Majuli river island

Assam · Brahmaputra Island

Majuli Travel Guidesatras, masks and Mishing villages.

Majuli is the world's largest river island — once 1,250 km², now about 350 km² as the Brahmaputra slowly eats its edges. It is the spiritual heart of Assamese neo-Vaishnavism, home to centuries-old satras (monasteries) and Mishing tribal villages on stilts. This guide covers the ferry, what to see and where to stay for two nights of genuine cultural depth.

01

The satras

Auniati, Kamalabari, Garamur, Bengenati and Dakhinpat are five of the most active satras. Founded in the 16th century by Srimanta Sankardev, they preserve sattriya dance, masks (mukha), bhaona theatre and chant traditions found nowhere else.

02

Mishing villages & weaving

Mishing communities live in stilt houses along the riverbank, weaving distinctive striped textiles on backstrap looms. Village dinners — fish, rice beer, river greens — are arranged through homestay hosts.

03

Mask making at Samaguri

Samaguri Satra is famous for bamboo-and-clay masks used in bhaona performances. Master Hemchandra Goswami's workshop welcomes visitors; allow an hour with the artisans.

04

Cycling & slow days

Majuli is flat, low-traffic and best explored by bicycle. Sunrise on the river, satra morning prayer, a slow lunch, sunset on a sandbar — that is the right pace.

05

Best time & ferries

November–March is dry and cool. Monsoon floods (June–September) can close ferries for days. The standard ferry runs every 1–2 hours from Nimati Ghat in Jorhat.

Traveller Questions

What you'll want to know.

How many days should I spend on Majuli?

Two nights minimum. One night is logistically possible but misses both a satra dawn and a river sunset.

Is Majuli safe for solo travellers?

Yes — Majuli is exceptionally relaxed, with strong community oversight and a long visitor culture.

How do I combine Majuli with Kaziranga?

Drive from Kaziranga to Nimati Ghat (3 hours), cross by ferry, two nights on the island, then continue to Jorhat or Dibrugarh for tea country or Arunachal.
