Tawang sits at 3,048 metres in the far west of Arunachal Pradesh — the spiritual heart of the Monpa people and home to one of the largest monasteries in the Buddhist world. The 17th-century Tawang Monastery and its dawn prayer assembly; Sela Pass at 4,170 metres; Madhuri Lake; the Monpa villages and apple orchards of Dirang; and Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary on the route up — one of the planet's richest bird regions.
March–June and September–early November are ideal. January–February are crystal-clear but Sela Pass can close for days at a stretch. July–August monsoon roads are unreliable.
Indian travellers need an Inner Line Permit (ILP); foreign nationals may require a Protected Area Permit (PAP), subject to current eligibility and route rules. Living Roots assists confirmed package guests with documentation and coordinates the process through applicable authorised channels.
