Specialist Journeys · Monpa Country

Tawang & The Monpa Highlandsmonastic expeditions in the eastern Himalaya.

Tawang sits at 3,048 metres in the far west of Arunachal Pradesh — the spiritual heart of the Monpa people and home to one of the largest monasteries in the Buddhist world. This hub gathers our Monpa cultural expeditions, monastic dawn-prayer access, Dirang village stays and the Eaglenest birding traverse on the route up.

01

Why go to Tawang

The 17th-century Tawang Monastery and its dawn prayer assembly; Sela Pass at 4,170 metres; Madhuri Lake; the Monpa villages and apple orchards of Dirang; and Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary on the route up — one of the planet's richest bird regions.

02

When to visit

March–June and September–early November are ideal. January–February are crystal-clear but Sela Pass can close for days at a stretch. July–August monsoon roads are unreliable.

03

Permits & access

Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Indian travellers; Protected Area Permit (PAP) for foreign nationals. We arrange both. The route from Guwahati or Tezpur takes two days each way; helicopter access from Guwahati is intermittent.

04

How long to plan

Seven days minimum from Guwahati; ten days lets you add Dirang, Eaglenest birding and a Monpa village day. Two nights minimum at Tawang itself.
