Assam is the gateway and the wildlife heart (Kaziranga, Manas, Majuli, Brahmaputra). Meghalaya is the Khasi-Jaintia-Garo hill country of root bridges and waterfalls. Arunachal Pradesh is the largest, most diverse and most permit-controlled — Tawang's monasteries, Ziro's Apatani valleys, Eaglenest birding. Nagaland is festival country (Hornbill, Aoling), tribal Konyak heartland in Mon. Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura round out the seven with unique cultural and historical depth.

October to April is the broad sweet spot — dry, cool, with peak wildlife sightings and the major festivals (Hornbill in December, Aoling in April). June–September is monsoon: dramatic in Meghalaya, difficult elsewhere. Kaziranga is firmly closed mid-May to October.

Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required for Indian travellers to Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for Arunachal and need to register on entry to Nagaland. Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura have no permit.
