Assam is the gateway and the wildlife heart (Kaziranga, Manas, Majuli, Brahmaputra). Meghalaya is the Khasi-Jaintia-Garo hill country of root bridges and waterfalls. Arunachal Pradesh is the largest, most diverse and most permit-controlled — Tawang's monasteries, Ziro's Apatani valleys, Eaglenest birding. Nagaland is festival country (Hornbill, Aoling), tribal Konyak heartland in Mon. Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura round out the seven with unique cultural and historical depth.

October to April is the broad sweet spot — dry, cool, with peak wildlife sightings and the major festivals (Hornbill in December, Aoling in April). June–September is monsoon: dramatic in Meghalaya, difficult elsewhere. Kaziranga is firmly closed mid-May to October.

Indian travellers need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur. Foreign passport holders must follow the current PAP, RAP and registration requirements for the state and route.
