Majuli Cultural Experiencesthe river island that keeps its monks.

Majuli, on the Brahmaputra north of Jorhat, is the world's largest river island and the spiritual heart of Assamese Vaishnavism. Twenty-two satras — monastic seats founded in the 16th century by the saint Srimanta Sankardev — still hold daily prayer, mask-making, manuscript painting and devotional dance. Our Majuli journeys are private, slow and built with the satra communities and the Mising villages of the island.

01

The satras we visit

Auniati (the largest and most institutional); Kamalabari (Borkamalabari for mask-making, Uttar Kamalabari for sattriya dance); Garamur (modern reform satra); Dakhinpat for music. We arrange dawn prayer attendance with the monks, mask-workshop sessions with master craftsmen and one-on-one conversations with the satradhikar where possible.

02

Mising villages and stilt-house life

The Mising community settled on Majuli from the Arunachal foothills four centuries ago. Their bamboo stilt houses sit above the Brahmaputra floodplain; the kitchens are the gathering point. We stay in Mising-run bamboo cottages, eat at family hearths and walk the rice-and-mustard fields at first light.

03

The mask makers of Samaguri

Samaguri satra under the Goswami family is the last living centre of Bhaona mask-making — six-foot painted bamboo-and-clay creatures carried in the Ras festival. We sit with the artisans, watch the layered construction and, if dates align, attend a Bhaona performance.

04

Birds, river and erosion

Majuli is half the size it was a century ago. The Brahmaputra eats it from every monsoon. The wetlands hold migratory geese, ibis, storks and ducks November to March. Boat rides at dawn and dusk are the strongest birding window.

05

How to plan a Majuli journey

Two nights minimum on the island; three nights to do it properly. Pair with Kaziranga (four hours west) and the tea estates around Jorhat. Best November to March; the ferry can suspend in monsoon.
