Heritage Sites of Northeast India

UNESCO parks, Ahom capitals, colonial memorials and monastic seats.

The Northeast holds three UNESCO World Heritage properties (Kaziranga, Manas and the Moidams of Charaideo) and dozens of state-protected sites — Ahom capitals, WWII battlefield memorials, Vaishnavite satras and Buddhist monastic complexes.

History & background

Ahom rule (1228–1826) shaped the mainland heritage; the two great WWII battles (Kohima 1944, Imphal 1944) shaped its 20th-century memory. Vaishnavite reformer Sankardev (1449–1568) founded the Majuli satras that still function today.

Geography

Heritage sites cluster along the Brahmaputra valley, the Kohima–Imphal battlefield corridor, Majuli's satra network and the Tawang monastic complex.

Cultural & ecological significance

This is a region where World War, Ahom empire, colonial botany and living monastic tradition sit within a day's drive of each other.
