Treks of Northeast India

From Dzukou's valley of flowers to the Mishmi high passes.

The Northeast holds India's least-crowded, most floristically rich trekking country. Bamboo forest, cloud-oak, rhododendron thickets and alpine meadow stack across four vertical kilometres from Brahmaputra floodplain to the Tawang snow-line.

History & background

Colonial-era plant hunters (Kingdon-Ward, Ludlow, Sherriff) mapped much of the eastern Himalayan flora on foot. Modern trekking routes largely follow their journals and the older grazing trails of Monpa, Bugun and Adi herders.

Geography

Three broad zones: sub-alpine (Dzukou, Shirui, Phawngpui) at 2,500–3,000m; alpine (Gorichen base, Bailey Trail) above 3,500m; and the deep rainforest treks of Namdapha and Mouling.

Cultural & ecological significance

For serious trekkers, this is Bhutan-level scenery with a fraction of the traffic. For naturalists, it is one of the richest botanical zones on earth.
