A Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the eastern Himalayas

Monasteries of Northeast India

The Gelugpa gompas of the eastern Himalaya.

Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and the border districts of Assam hold some of the most important living Gelugpa (Yellow-Hat) monasteries outside Tibet. Tawang alone is the second-largest Buddhist monastery complex in the world and the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama.

History & background

The Monpa arrived in the Tawang valley from Bhutan and Tibet in the 8th–11th centuries. Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgey Lhatse) was founded in 1680–81 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso on the wish of the fifth Dalai Lama.

Geography

The great gompas ring the eastern Himalaya between 2,000m and 3,500m — Tawang, Urgelling, Bomdila, Rumtek in Sikkim, Enchey and Pemayangtse. Lower foothill monasteries include Namshu and Mechuka's Samten Yongcha.

Cultural & ecological significance

These monasteries are working centres of monastic education, thangka painting, cham dance and traditional medicine — not museums.
