Rivers of Northeast India

The Brahmaputra, Barak, Siang and Loktak — arteries of the region.

Every civilisation in the Northeast is a river civilisation. The Brahmaputra alone drains an area larger than France; the Siang, Lohit and Dibang combine to form it just above Assam. The Barak defines southern Assam and Manipur; the Umngot and Dawki reveal Meghalaya's karst geology in emerald.

History & background

The Ahom kingdom, the Kachari, the Koch and the Manipuri Meitei all built along river bends. British planters extended the tea belt along the Brahmaputra's north and south banks in the 1830s; steamer navigation once ran from Kolkata to Dibrugarh.

Geography

Braided Himalayan rivers (Siang, Subansiri, Kameng), the master Brahmaputra floodplain, the Barak valley, and Meghalaya's fast karst streams (Umngot, Kynshi) — each is a distinct hydrological world.

Cultural & ecological significance

River systems shape agriculture, cuisine, textile and even language borders. Understanding them is the shortest route to understanding the region.
