Birding Destinations of Northeast India

Eaglenest, Mishmi Hills, Namdapha — the world's finest birding frontier.

Arunachal Pradesh alone holds more than 700 recorded bird species — including the Bugun liocichla, first described from Eaglenest in 2006. Mishmi Hills, Namdapha and Nameri complete a birding circuit unmatched anywhere in South Asia.

History & background

The Bugun liocichla, discovered by astronomer Ramana Athreya at Eaglenest in 1995 and formally described in 2006, was the first new bird species discovered in India in more than fifty years.

Geography

The Eastern Himalayan foothills (Eaglenest, Sela Pass, Mishmi) and the Indo-Burma rainforest (Namdapha, Dampa) sit at the exact convergence of two biogeographic zones — the reason species density is so extreme.

Cultural & ecological significance

This is the last easily accessible cloud-forest birding on earth. Serious life-listers plan around it.
