Road Trips of Northeast India

The great overland journeys of the eastern Himalaya.

The Northeast is best experienced overland. From the Guwahati–Tawang high-mountain drive to the Dimapur–Longwa Konyak circuit, the road journeys here are among Asia's most scenic and most demanding.

History & background

Many main roads follow WWII supply lines built by the American and British engineers who kept the Kohima–Imphal front supplied. The Stilwell Road from Ledo (Assam) once ran all the way to Kunming.

Geography

Four great overland corridors: Guwahati → Bhalukpong → Dirang → Tawang (Sela Pass); Dimapur → Mokokchung → Mon (Konyak country); Guwahati → Shillong → Cherrapunji → Dawki; and Dibrugarh → Roing → Mayodia Pass → Anini (Mishmi Hills).

Cultural & ecological significance

Overland journeys reveal what flying skips — the tea belt, the ridge-crossings, the roadside markets and the shifting language boundaries every fifty kilometres.

How to reach

Living Roots uses experienced Northeast-specialist drivers with 4x4 SUVs (Innova Crysta, Fortuner, Scorpio). Never self-drive at first attempt — road conditions and checkposts require local knowledge.

Travel tips

  • ·Distances look short on the map and take three times longer on the ground.
  • ·Carry motion-sickness relief for the switchback sections above 2,000m.
  • ·Fuel is scarce beyond district capitals; drivers plan tanks accordingly.

Common questions

Are the roads safe?+

Main roads are safe with an experienced driver. Landslides during monsoon are the main risk — avoid June–September for high-altitude routes.

Can we self-drive?+

Not recommended for first-time visitors. Permits, checkposts and terrain make a specialist driver essential.
